About Blakeney and the Surrounding Area

BlakeneyBlakeney is an unspoilt village, excellent for touring the North Norfolk coast and in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Brick and flint cottages line the narrow streets, which slope down to the Quay and tidal creek. The salt marshes stretch out to Blakeney Point, a National Trust reserve, famous for its seals and migrating birds. There are many scenic walks from Blakeney and it is an ideal location for a holiday at any time of year.

It is easy to walk to two good pubs in Blakeney - The White Horse and The Kings Arms - which both serve local beers and good food. The Moorings restaurant serves excellent food (booking advised), and there is a large Spar for normal groceries, bread and papers. Blakeney also boasts a fresh fish shop, an excellent delicatessen, a chandlers and gift shop.

Blakeney is ideal for dinghy sailing, with a free to use dinghy park should you wish to bring your own boat. It is owned by The National Trust and is one of the few free quays left. Sailing lessons can be organised with Charlie Ward in Morston or Blakeney Sailing School. You are advised to organise these before your arrival as they do get booked up. There are also kayaks for hire from the quay during the summer.

Boat trips to see the seals at Blakeney Point are a high point of any visit. These can be booked from the quay at Blakeney but usually leave from Morston due to tides.

Good beaches are located at Wells and Sheringham which are within 15 minutes by car. A small beach is useable at low tide in Blakeney which is ideal for smaller children. For a truly spectacular beach you should not miss Holkam which has been used as a film set many times.

For those interested in Golf, several good courses can be found in the area. Sheringham and Cromer have very good links courses.

Sheringham has an excellent indoor swimming pool, with flumes and wave machine.

For those who enjoy shopping trips mixed in with other activities you will not be disappointed.

Cley - Pottery, excellent delicatessen, smoked fish shop, and an art gallery.

Holt - is the nearest larger town and includes a supermarket (Budgens), many antique shops, several art galleries, Bakers & Larners Department Store, and many good clothes shops. It is very easy to lose a day here and enjoy a good lunch at Byfords or Butlers Pantry.

Burnham Market - an attractive Georgian town offering a good choice of clothes shops, gift shops and restaurants. The Hoste Arms is a well known pub and great for lunch and dinner.

Norwich - A cathedral city with all that you would expect. It is less than one hours drive away, it is great for rainy days.

There are some very interesting National Trust properties nearby including Felbrigg Hall and Blickling Hall.
